USS Oklahoma anchor move is permanent

The public symbol of the USS Oklahoma, its 10-ton iron anchor, is moving permanently to a new location about 10 blocks north of its former downtown home.

The city's park commission voted unanimously Wednesday to make the move permanent.

The state's namesake battleship was sunk by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor more than 60 years ago. For years, veterans gathered at the anchor's location at Park Avenue and Broadway on Dec. 7 to remember the attacks that began World War II.

The anchor had to be moved last month as construction continued on the Skirvin Hotel. Workers moved the anchor to park land along the east side of Broadway at N 13.

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation is working on a permanent display for the anchor, which is sitting on the park's grass.
