Living through an air-raid

AddThis Social Bookmark Button
We were able to watch from our back bedroom window London burning during the blitz.

I remember well my Gran in tears because her sister, niece and one daughter lived in London. The sister and niece were killed during the blitz, and her daughter basically lived in an air raid shelter during this terrible time. ... I well remember the sound of the “buzz” bomb.

It sounded like a truck coming down hill after losing brakes. One landed near us in the main road, and we were not able to go to school for several days. The kids in my neighborhood just had to see the crater.

A restaurant in town called The People’s Pantry was hit by a flying bomb and 64 patrons died. My cousin was working nearby and was in the ladies room; she was blown out into the street by the concussion. Our elementary school was strafed the same day. ... My dad and granddad were in the Home Guard.

Their assignment was to guard the BBC radio station. They had moved to a mansion near our home. Dad always came home a nervous wreck, never knowing whether Germans had infiltrated the area in parachutes.
