Margaret L. Murphy (Hamilton) was a licensed welder and worked on many of the 519 Liberty ships from the Permanente Metals Corporation in San Francisco before joining the army.
The term “Rosie the Riveter” fits my mother. After spending time in the shipyards she decided to enlist in the Women’s Army Corps and served in WWII in Germany for the U.S. military, for more than 3 years.
During her tour of duty in Germany and towards the tail end of the war, she went back to work in the German shipyards welding on American ships.
When she wasn’t working, she spent her free time helping the German children who lost their families through the war by driving through the No-Zone Area to deliver candy and other items to over 500 children and their families.
Margaret spoke fluent German, French and Latin which made her a huge asset to the Women’s Army Corps.
